During your lifetime, there are many skills you will have to learn. Some of these skills you might be born with and others must be earned. Either way, the most important one is having confidence in yourself. Confidence not only helps you do your best and reach goals, but it helps you develop as a human being and a person who honestly takes pride in who they are and what they do.

How do you know if you don’t have the skill? By the fact that you are not already rich. If you were good at starting companies, someone would have already paid you a lot of money to do it. This is not just true of founders of big companies. It’s also true of people who start tiny companies that grow up to be big ones, like Paul Buchheit or George Hotz.
Paul Buchheit made exactly one dollar from starting Gmail. He had some stock options in a previous company he’d founded, but they were underwater. So when in 2002 he started working on an idea for email that would use almost no disk space, he was doing it for fun and to scratch an itch, not to get rich. Eighteen months later Gmail went live, and two years after that Google bought it from him for what turned out to be $200 million. Buchheit got one dollar.
George Hotz got $10 million for selling his company to Facebook. But by then he’d been famous as a hacker for over ten years, and had received all kinds of offers from people trying to hire him, including at least one previous offer from Facebook. So again, Hotz’s success wasn’t due to any unusual ability on his part to recognize opportunities in the upcoming life.
Why are skills important?
You can have all the raw talent. You can have all the abilities in the world. But if you don’t have skills, you’re not going to get very far. That’s why we spent so much time on skills at YC. That’s why we make people do so many practice rounds. That’s why we mock interview every company before Demo Day. It’s also why I spend most of my time working in languages that I’m not good at and solving problems that I could solve more easily in other languages: it’s a great way to learn new skills.
The difference between those who succeed and those who fail is this: the successful ones simply did one more thing than the ones who failed–one more phone call, one more email, one more meeting, etc. Skills are what allow you to do that one extra thing.
A lot of people think that skills are boring because they’re not “raw talent.” They couldn’t be more wrong skills make all the difference. You can be born with talent but not the work ethic or other traits to really get ahead in life. But it is impossible to be born with skills it takes hard work to learn them, and they are therefore a fundamental part of your meritocracy as a human being

You may be thinking, “Well, sure but my job doesn’t involve writing.” Wrong. To a first approximation, every job involves some writing. The programmer who writes a comment for his code so he can remember what it does six months from now has to write it well so he can understand it when he returns. The salesperson who writes an email to a customer describing how to install his product has to write it well or the customer will find it unusable and will return it with a complaint. The executive who writes a memo to his staff explaining his new policy will have trouble implementing it if the memo is incoherent.
The ability to write well was never more important than today because almost everyone who holds a job spends much of his time writing emails and memos and reports. In addition, many people do a considerable amount of writing at home on social media and other activities. If you can learn to write clear English prose, you’ll have an advantage over almost everyone else you meet.

The job interview is a tough thing. When you are an engineer, it seems like every interviewer might as well have the same questions. It’s hard because you never know what they want to hear. If you say that you are the kind of person who won’t panic in the face of a problem, that could be good or bad depending on how they feel about panicking in general. The question is more about how you handle yourself than about your technical skills. It’s about personality stuff.
So there isn’t much to do other than hope for the best and prepare for the worst. But at least if you make it through that first round, then there will be a chance for them to see what you are actually like.
Before you get an offer, your potential employer would definitely evaluate you through a job interview. In order to make a good impression before him or her, here are some skills that help:
- Be honest and direct. You don’t want to tell the potential employer that you are “fluent in Java” if you barely remember how to use it. Be honest about what you have done and what you can do.

- Empathy. The ability to see the world as other people see it. This is what allows a trial lawyer to imagine what would persuade a jury of their client’s innocence, or an entrepreneur to guess at what their customers will want next year; it’s what enables an artist to make creative things.
Technical skills are a valuable commodity. The reason is not that they can be used for evil. They can, but so can everything else. The real reason technical skills are valued is that they’re rare.
There was a time when almost everyone knew how to build a wall or sow a field. Now, these are specialized skills, and the people who have them are valuable. But if everyone were taught how to program at an early age, programming would be less valuable. It would still be useful, just less so than it is now.
This means programming should not be taught in elementary school unless we also want it taught in kindergarten. And if we did that it would lose most of its value as a credential, because you could no longer distinguish between people who were good at programming and people who had merely taken Programming 101 in high school
Professional skills are not innate, you learn them by practice. The key is to start working on something. You may think that you need to have a complete picture of the problem before you can begin, but this will delay your work. Just start working on something.
