One of the most prestigious exams in India is the Civil Service Exam (CSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission or UPSC. All India Civil Services

AIS or the All India Services provides for three civil services and they are IAS(Indian Administrative Service), IPS(Indian Police Service), and IFoS( Indian Forest Service). One of the unique features of AIS is that the staff are recruited by the Central government but they can be placed in service to various state cadres so they have the option to work under both the Centre as well as the state governments. The All India Service Rules make guidelines and regulations for payment, leave, conduct, allowances, etc. and all the staff have to comply with them.  

Below, brief details on the 3 services of AIS have been provided:

IAS –

Indian Administrative Service is one of the strongest pillars of the Indian and State Governments. IAS Cadre has to bear the responsibility of formulation and implementation of government policies. The IAS begin their probationary period training at LBSNAA in Mussoorie.

IPS –

Another prestigious post of AIS is IPS or the Indian Police Service. The officers are trained at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy which is situated in Hyderabad. IPS Officers occupy the senior ranks in the police service, in positions like RAW, IB, CBI, etc.

IFoS –

IFoS is the third category of All India Civil Services and the Cadres to this post serve under the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change. Director-General or DG of Forests is the highest position of IFoS working with the Central government and the highest position of IFoS working with the State government is Principal Chief Conservator of Forests. IFoS officers also work with various agricultural organizations like FAO (Food and Agricultural Organisation). 

UPSC Jobs List under Group A Services or Central Services

Group A civil services are responsible for the administration of the union government and include some really well-known and highly reputed posts. These are IFS, IAAS, ICAS, IDAS, IDES, IIS, IPoS, IRS, ITS, IRTS, IRPS, and many more services.

The candidates selected as officers to these posts are appointed directly by the President of India. 

Candidates are required to qualify for the UPSC Examination as well as clear the interview and as per the preferences and qualifications, they will be placed under Group A services. Officers serving under Grade A get the responsibility of working for the central government directly and get highly lucrative salaries as well as power and position. 

UPSC Jobs List under Group B Services or State Services

The group B services include the Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Forest Service (IFoS), which are organized under different cadres in each state, and a few other specialized services such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). Together they form the backbone of the state machinery. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination to recruit candidates for these services. The UPSC can make regulations prescribing the eligibility conditions for a candidate to appear for this examination.

The UPSC IAS exam is conducted in three stages: preliminary, main, and interview. Only those who qualify in the preliminary exam are eligible for the mains and then they finally appear for the UPSC interview stage. The final rank list is prepared on the basis of marks obtained by candidates in the main exam and interview stage.

The Civil Services Examination is considered one of the toughest competitive examinations in the world. The success rate in Civil Services Examination as per Wikipedia has been less than 1% since 2013. This figure was 0.94% as per UPSC reports released on 25 May 2016. The number of candidates who have appeared for the exam in 2015 was 982,952; out of which only 4,120 were selected finally. 

Other exams held by UPSC

The UPSC is India’s central agency for recruiting civil servants. It recommends candidates for all the services and posts under the Indian Government, except public sector banks and public enterprises.

Besides Civil Services Examination, UPSC also conducts examinations for the following services:-

(i) Indian Statistical Service Examination

(ii) Engineering Services Examination

(iii) Combined Medical Services Examination

(iv) Combined Defence Services Examination

(v) National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination

(vi) Special Class Railway Apprentice

(vii) Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service Examination

(viii) Combined Geoscientist and Geologist Examination

(ix) Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandant)

With a view to maintaining uniformity in the standard of the various examinations held by it, the Commission has a scheme of holding interviews for personality tests. The candidates who qualify for the results of a written examination are summoned by them for an interview for a personality test.

The average salary of a person working under Indian Post and Telecommunication Accounts and Finance Service receives around Rs. 67,000 annually. The amount can vary for different posts and ranks. The list of posts under this is Assistant Chief Accounts Officer, Joint Controller of Communication Accounts, Assistant Director-General, etc.
