The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is India’s premier central recruiting agency. UPSC is responsible for appointments for All India services and group A & group B of Central services. While the Department of Personnel and Training is the central personnel agency in India.
The commission is mandated by the Constitution for appointments to the services of the Union and All India Services. It is also required to be consulted by the Government in matters relating to the appointment, transfer, promotion, and disciplinary matters. The commission reports directly to the President and can advise the Government through him. Although, such advice is not binding on the Government. Being a constitutional authority, UPSC is amongst the few institutions which function with both autonomy and freedom, along with the country’s higher judiciary and lately the Election Commission.
State Civil Services Exams
The State Civil Services Exams are conducted by the UPSC every year. The exam consists of 3 stages – Prelims, Mains, and Interview.
The Prelims consist of two papers – General Studies-I and General Studies-II (CSAT). Both papers are of 200 marks each, and the duration for each paper is 2 hours. The questions in both papers are objective/multiple choice.
The marks scored in the General Studies-I paper alone determine whether a candidate qualifies for the Mains examination or not.
The Mains examination consists of 9 papers – 2 qualifying papers (one of English and one of any Indian language), 4 General Studies papers, 1 Essay paper, 1 Paper on optional subject & 1 Paper on the optional subject (if opted for 2 subjects).
Candidates should appear for only one optional subject. One has to secure at least 25% marks in each qualifying paper and 50% marks in aggregate in all qualifying papers to be eligible for writing the Mains examination.
The Interview is held after candidates qualify for the Mains examination. Marks scored by candidates in the interview range from 275 to 300.
GATE (Government jobs after BE/B.tech)
GATE Exam is conducted on a national level and it is a gateway for getting admission into Post Graduate Programmes in Engineering or Technology. GATE Exam is conducted by one of the seven IITs or IISc Bangalore with guidance from the National Coordination Board (GATE) under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. ONGC

Coal India operates through 81 mining areas in eight states in India. As of 1 April 2015, it has 430 coal mines out of which 175 are open cast, 227 are underground and 28 are mixed mines.
