Multiple-choice questions with four options and a single right answer are common.

Multiple-choice sentence-insertion questions in which the test-taker must select the best phrase from four possibilities that best fits the sentence.

Multiple right answers to questions with more than four options. Every passage contains at least one question of this type.

Speaking

The test taker must speak from personal experience, express opinions, and offer arguments. It’s all done over the internet. The question formats that have been pre-defined are listed below.

Speakers are given independent speaking activities in which they are invited to share their thoughts, opinions, and experiences. These are initial questions designed to learn how a person introduces oneself, their attitude, their speaking style, and more.

Integrated speaking tasks are different from the ones listed above in that they combine two or more English skills, such as reading and listening. The tasks could come from a college setting or a class.

Listening

The TOEFL listening portion is designed to provide a comprehensive assessment of the test-understanding takers of spoken English. It tests one’s ability or skills to create connections between different topics, draw conclusions, and assess the speaker’s attitude and mood.

Test takers hear natural-sounding recordings of lectures and intellectual conversations. Candidates are asked a series of questions based on the information from the recording, which is listed below:

Traditional multiple-choice questions feature four options and only one correct response.

There are more than four alternatives and more than one right answer in multiple-choice questions.

Ordering questions ask test participants to organize the events in the tape in the order they occur.

Questions requiring test-takers to match categories with related language, objects, etc.

Writing

Integrated Writing Task: Participants will listen to a recording for 20 minutes and then read a 230-300 word passage. They must write about how they relate to each other based on their understanding of both. It is permissible to take notes. There are no right or wrong answers. The suggested word limit is 150-225 words, however, there is no penalty if you write more.

This is an experience-based essay that you must write independently:

The test-taker is given an issue or topic on which they must express their ideas in at least 300 words.

Evaluators look for things like language, organization, and the ability to back up a claim with evidence, elaboration, sentence design, and conclusion.

The following scale is used to score the various portions of the test:

0 to 30 minutes of reading

0 to 30 minutes of writing

0 to 30 minutes of speaking
