Stock Market Today

On Thursday, Indian equities were modest as IT losses outweighed gains in bank companies, with investors presumably seeing beyond statements from the United States Federal Reserve indicating a sustained hawkish posture.

As of 0450 GMT, the NSE Nifty 50 index was up 0.04% at 18,090.55, while the S&P BSE Sensex Today 4 Nov 2022 was up 0.07% at 60,946.57. The benchmark indices fell as much as 0.6% in early trade, mirroring the overnight declines in other Asian markets and on Wall Street.

Sensex Today 4 Nov 2022

In the tumultuous session on November 3, Indian benchmark indexes finished slightly down.

The Sensex Today 4 Nov 2022 was down 69.68 points or 0.11% at 60,836.41 at the close, while the Nifty was down 30.10 points or 0.17% at 18,052.70. Around 1725 shares have risen, 1630 have fallen, and 120 have remained constant.

Among the top Nifty losses were Tech Mahindra, Hindalco Industries, Power Grid Corporation, NTPC, and Infosys. SBI, Titan Company, UPL, HUL, and HUL were among the gainers.

Except for the banks, real estate, and FMCG, all other sectoral indexes ended in the red.

The BSE midcap and smallcap indexes finished flat.

Nifty50

On the technical front, the main resistance level for the Nifty50 is 18,200, while 17,900 might function as solid support on the downside. Bank Nifty’s key resistance and support levels are 41,700 and 40,900, respectively.

Dow Jones Today

The Dow sank dramatically Wednesday as Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell dampened bets for a Fed pause following the central bank’s fourth consecutive rate hike.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 505 points, or 1.6%.

DAX Index

Germany’s equities fell after the close on Thursday, driven by losses in the Retail, Construction, and Financial Services sectors.

The DAX index sank 0.61% at the closing in Frankfurt, while the MDAX index fell 1.12% and the TecDAX index dipped 0.65%.

Fresenius Medical Care KGAA ST (ETR: FMEG) was the strongest performance on the DAX during the day, rising 2.99% or 0.83 points to close at 28.55. In late activity, Merck KGaA (ETR: MRCG) gained 1.50% or 2.45 points to close at 165.85, while Puma SE (ETR: PUMG) gained 0.93% or 0.43 points to 46.86. The BSE midcap and smallcap indexes finished flat.

Nasdaq Index

The Nasdaq plummeted 3.4%. Semiconductor stocks fell as well, with Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) giving up gains on disappointing quarterly earnings and outlook.

Meanwhile, Airbnb Inc (NASDAQ: ABNB) plummeted more than 13% after the fourth-quarter forecast fell slightly short of expectations, overshadowing quarterly earnings that topped the bottom line.

S and P 500

The S&P 500 sank 2.5%. US markets finished substantially down on Wednesday, as remarks from Fed Chair Jerome Powell shattered initial excitement over a Fed policy statement that hiked interest rates by 75 basis points while signalling that fewer rate rises may be on the way.

SGX Nifty

The Nifty futures on the Singapore Exchange were 147.5 points, or 0.81 percent, down at 18,015, indicating that Dalal Street was set to open lower on Thursday.

The Nifty 50’s physiologically critical milestone of 18000 is a make-or-break level. If the index remains above this level, it may climb toward the 18200 level.

Investors booked profits ahead of the result of the US Fed meeting due to the risk-off sentiment.

Crude Oil Futures

Oil futures dipped early Thursday as the dollar strengthened in response to the Federal Reserve’s hawkish attitude, but concerns about potential supply issues kept prices under control. Brent crude fell 44 cents, or 0.5%, to $95.72 a barrel at 0146 GMT, while WTI crude futures in the United States fell 59 cents, or 0.7%, to $89.41.

Overall World Stock Market

The Fed’s failure to tone down the rate rise narrative devastated global markets, as investors expected dovish comments. Powel warns that the intended Fed rate level is higher than expected, notwithstanding his indication of a rate rise of fewer than 75 basis points in the next meetings. Concerns about the US recession fueled the domestic selloff, although FII support helped limit the losses.

European stocks began substantially down on Thursday as the Federal Reserve muted any prospects of a change in its robust fight against inflation, instead hinting at fewer interest rate rises for a longer period of time. By 0810 GMT, the pan-European STOXX 600 had down 0.9%, with rate-sensitive European technology companies down 1.5%. Most major European sector indices fell, with the exception of banking, which rose by roughly 0.1%.
