Stress relief is something that we all look for, but very few of us achieve. Stress isn’t just an annoyance or an inconvenience; it can be detrimental to your health, your mental well-being, and even your relationships with those around you. It can even start affecting you physically – in fact, the constant stress response of the body has been linked to many serious illnesses, including heart disease and cancer. So how do we go about reducing our stress levels? Here are some great tips on how to achieve stress relief in today’s world.

Stop multitasking

Multitasking may seem like harmless behavior, but it’s been found to increase stress, as it causes people to react more slowly to interruptions and makes them less aware of how their work is progressing. One of the first things people can do is learn how to do one thing at a time. Once they’re in the zone, they can take on another task when that first task is completed.

Talk less, listen more

Spending time talking about a problem or issue can make it feel bigger and out of control. It is hard to find balance in life, especially when you are so wrapped up in one thing. Here are three things you can do to let go of stress and allow your brain to Stress Relief:

-Try going for a walk. Take some deep breaths and focus on the sounds around you. Listen to the birds chirping and notice how beautiful everything looks right now. Remember that this moment will pass, but your memories will last forever if you take the time to enjoy them now.- Take a few minutes to sit in silence each day with no distractions from technology or other people. Be mindful of what thoughts come into your head; some might be happy memories, and others might be what we need to plan for tomorrow.- Take a bath before bed.

Laugh at yourself

You need to laugh. This is the best stress reliever in my opinion. We go too hard all the time, if we can’t laugh with someone, then we must find something funny to bring home and watch on Netflix or YouTube (my two favorite sources of laughter). Once you start laughing again it gets better. Laughter is the best medicine. And don’t forget to take your medication when it’s prescribed 🙂 

I recently found a great site called Daily Mash. It posts videos that have been circulating on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites that they’ve cut together into hilarious short clips. I mean come on… who doesn’t like a good old dad joke from time to time? I’m going, to be honest here though, sometimes dad jokes are so corny that they’re just plain stupid. Don’t judge me for saying that.

Get outside, stay active

Engaging in a healthy, active lifestyle can lower your stress levels. Taking care of your body by eating well and getting plenty of exercises will help you feel better both physically and mentally. Don’t forget to take time to do the things you enjoy doing – alone or with others – whether it be reading a book or watching the sunrise. Simple pleasures can go a long way in relieving stress.

Take a break

We live in an overwhelming world and our stress levels reflect that. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way. Setting aside time for a break can reduce the negative effects of stressful events and allow you to start fresh afterward. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, here are some tips on how to calm your body and mind.

Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated is a crucial key to feeling less stressed. Drink plenty of water and have an extra bottle with you at all times. Plus, try making green tea for a refreshing beverage which also helps your body to remove toxins. Drinking decaffeinated coffee or green tea can provide the same benefits as caffeine without the high from drinking caffeinated drinks such as coffee. Make sure that you’re not going more than four hours without eating to keep your blood sugar level regulated and avoid feelings of fatigue. Lastly, try getting out in nature for a quick walk if it isn’t too cold outside to reduce cortisol levels in the brain which leads to stress and anxiety symptoms.

Learn to say no

Achieving stress relief in today’s world can seem like an impossible feat, but it doesn’t have to be. Say no to the things you don’t want to do or need to do so that you can say yes to the things you love and enjoy. Then decide what you need and permit yourself to take care of your needs. Be mindful of when your energy is waning and stop working so hard at trying to complete tasks that require concentration as well as physical energy. Take time for yourself every day by doing something small like taking a walk, reading a book, or going for a swim to refuel your mental reserves.

Manage your time wisely

Plan your day the night before to make sure you set yourself up for success. Also, know when your work energy is at its peak so that you can plan around those times. And if you’re having trouble concentrating, try meditating for 10 minutes in a place where you won’t be disturbed. It will help clear your mind and make it easier to focus on tasks that need attention. There are also apps like Headspace that have guided meditation sessions. Just close your eyes, take some deep breaths, and relax.
